September in Our New Class

Welcome to our new blog!

We are settled back into school now and we wanted to share with you some activities we got up to during our first month in First Class!

Galway were playing in the All-Ireland Hurling Final in September. We made and painted Galway jerseys (maroon and white) to support them. Sadly, they didn't win this time but we will be ready to support them again next year.

We also had a fun afternoon gardening with Kay. We all got a chance to plant some daffodil seeds. We will keep an eye on them and watch their progress over the next few months.

Hurling blitz

We went to a fun hurling blitz at Liam Mellow's today, where we played with the other first classes. We had loads of fun, and what a day we had...the sun was splitting the rocks! We all got a medal for taking part. Thanks Timmy for a great day!

Music in the Classroom

Today, we went to Leisureland to watch the RTE concert orchestra perform 'Music in the Classroom.' We had great fun! We had spent the last few weeks learning the songs so we were well prepared for the performance.

Explorer's Education Programme

Noirin came back to visit us today and to teach us some more about marine life. We learned lots of big words - one was 'camouflage.' We then did a fun activity where we cut out shapes from newspaper and tried to camouflage them onto another sheet of newspaper!
Noirin looked at our project which was about seahorses. We learned lots about seahorses when doing our project. Did you know that seahorses swim upright and that they are the slowest fish in the ocean?
Finally, Noirin showed us a diagram of a squid, before producing a real squid for us to examine! We took turns holding him before Noirin cut him open so we could see inside him! We even got to write using his ink!
Before Noirin left she presented us with a certificate for taking part in the Explorer's Education Programme. We had great fun. Thanks, Noirin!

Marine science fun!

Today, Noirin from the Explorer's Project came into our class to talk to us about marine science. She showed us some dried sea creatures, including a starfish, a seahorse, a sea snail and a set of shark's teeth! We then did an experiment to determine whether fresh water is heavier than salt water.

We put red food colouring in the salt water and as you can see, we discovered it is heavier than fresh water!
